What Is a Storm Surge?

Elevated Bradenton, FL coastal home surrounded by storm surge floodwater after severe coastal flooding.

When most people think about hurricanes, they think about powerful winds. In reality, water is often the greatest threat.

A storm surge is responsible for many of the most devastating losses during major hurricanes, especially along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Even homeowners who live several miles inland are often surprised by how quickly rising water can spread through neighborhoods, damage homes, and create dangerous conditions.

For residents of Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton, Sarasota, and surrounding communities, understanding what a storm surge is can help you make better decisions before a storm arrives and know what to do if your home experiences flooding afterward.

Dry Pro has been great to work with. When our upstairs AC leaked into the subfloor and drywall, their team did a thorough inspection and dried everything out with their equipment. When we found a water spot in the ceiling under the master shower, Adrian and his team turned a stressful situation into a quick diagnosis, quick dry out, and quick cleanup. Friendly, detail-oriented, and they care about doing it right. I highly recommend them.

I cannot say enough amazing things about Adrian and his team at DryPro. I was referred to Adrian, the owner, through a neighbor after finding mold in our kitchen pantry. As a mom of two young children, finding mold in your home is alarming and scary, and I honestly didn’t know what to do. Adrian took my call immediately and completely put my mind at ease. I explained what was going on, and his amazing team showed up that same day with air scrubbers so everything could be handled safely while we waited for the drywall to dry enough to remove it. When they came back to do the remediation, they explained everything to me, were incredibly honest and kind, and made sure my family was safe throughout the entire process. Thankfully, the mold issue wasn’t too bad, but Adrian still treated it with urgency and care. He gave me a quote quickly, the turnaround was incredibly fast, and he even personally came out to make sure he didn’t see anything further that concerned him. Normally, something like finding mold in my home would have sent my anxiety through the roof, but Adrian and his employees genuinely took care of us. I felt heard, seen, and understood exactly what was happening every step of the way. I am so thankful we found a company that is honest, trustworthy, responsive, and truly cares about the families they are helping. I would recommend DryPro and Adrian to anyone without hesitation. They truly went above and beyond for our family, and I am incredibly grateful!

I can’t say enough good things about Dry Pro Inc. Every single time I’ve called, they’ve been available, responsive, and ready to help. I’ve referred them to several of my real estate clients when questions or concerns have come up with their properties, and they’ve always taken the time to assess the situation, explain what’s going on, and put my clients at ease. I’ve also personally seen them step in when a friend had a major kitchen issue from a leaking dishwasher, and they handled the situation quickly and professionally. As a Realtor, it’s incredibly important to have reliable professionals I can confidently refer to my clients, and Dry Pro is definitely one of them. I know when I make that call, they’re going to show up and take care of things. Highly recommend!

I’m a real estate professional and I only will recommend companies to my clients if I would use them myself. Adrian was fantastic! Honest, respectful and reliable!

What Is a Storm Surge?

A storm surge is an abnormal rise in seawater caused by a hurricane or tropical storm pushing water toward the shoreline.

Unlike regular ocean tides, a storm surge happens because intense winds continuously force massive amounts of water inland while the storm’s low atmospheric pressure also contributes to rising water levels.

The result can be several feet of rapidly moving water that floods coastal communities, roads, businesses, and homes long before the center of the hurricane makes landfall.

Storm surge is different from heavy rainfall or river flooding. Instead of rain falling from the sky, storm surge is ocean water being pushed onto land.

In severe storms, water can travel surprisingly far inland, depending on local geography, elevation, and the strength of the hurricane.

Storm Surge vs. Storm Tide

These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same.

Storm Surge

Storm surge refers only to the abnormal rise in water caused by the hurricane itself.

Storm Tide

Storm tide is the total water level created when storm surge combines with the normal astronomical tide.

If a hurricane arrives during high tide, flooding can become significantly worse because the ocean is already elevated before the storm pushes additional water ashore.

This is one reason emergency officials closely monitor both hurricane forecasts and tide schedules during hurricane season.

Drypro providing professional water damage restoration, structural drying, and drywall removal services in Lakewood Ranch.

Why Is Storm Surge So Dangerous?

Storm surge is incredibly destructive because it combines depth, speed, and force.

Moving seawater can:

  • Flood homes within minutes
  • Destroy walls and flooring
  • Undermine foundations
  • Carry boats, vehicles, and debris into structures
  • Damage electrical systems
  • Contaminate homes with saltwater, fuel, sewage, and chemicals

Many homeowners assume a few inches of water isn’t a major concern. However, even shallow saltwater flooding can cause significant structural damage and lead to costly repairs if not addressed properly.

Can Storm Surge Affect Inland Communities?

Yes!

One of the biggest misconceptions is that storm surge only affects beachfront properties.

Depending on the hurricane, storm size, and local terrain, surge waters can move well beyond the immediate coastline.

Communities throughout western Manatee and Sarasota counties may experience flooding from storm surge, especially near bays, rivers, canals, and low-lying neighborhoods.

Even if your home in Lakewood Ranch is not directly exposed to the Gulf, nearby communities such as Bradenton, Palmetto, Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Cortez, and portions of Sarasota may experience significant surge flooding that affects surrounding infrastructure, roadways, and emergency response.

Every storm behaves differently, which is why evacuation zones are based on flood risk rather than proximity to the beach alone.

How High Can a Storm Surge Be?

Storm surge heights vary based on several factors, including:

  • Hurricane strength
  • Storm size
  • Forward speed
  • Wind direction
  • Coastal shape
  • Water depth offshore
  • Local elevation
  • Tide level at landfall

A slower-moving hurricane can continue pushing water toward shore for an extended period, increasing flood depths.

Shallow coastal shelves, like much of Florida’s Gulf Coast, are especially vulnerable because water has fewer places to disperse before reaching land.

What Damage Does Storm Surge Cause Inside a Home?

At DryPro, one of the most common situations following hurricanes is water intrusion that initially appears minor but becomes much larger once materials begin drying.

Storm surge water can affect:

  • Drywall
  • Insulation
  • Flooring
  • Cabinets
  • Baseboards
  • Electrical components
  • HVAC systems
  • Furniture
  • Personal belongings

Saltwater is particularly damaging because it accelerates corrosion, leaves mineral deposits behind, and can continue degrading building materials long after the visible water has been removed.

Professional drying and restoration often involves much more than simply extracting standing water.

Is Storm Surge Water Safe?

No! Storm surge water should always be treated as contaminated.

As seawater moves inland, it can mix with:

  • Sewage
  • Fuel and oil
  • Chemicals
  • Pesticides
  • Animal waste
  • Sharp debris
  • Bacteria

Because of these contaminants, it’s important to avoid direct contact whenever possible and never assume floodwater is clean.

If your home has experienced storm surge flooding, proper cleaning, sanitizing, and drying are critical to reducing health risks and preventing additional damage.

What Should You Do After Storm Surge Flooding?

Safety always comes first.

Do not enter a flooded home until local officials say it is safe.

Once you can safely access your property:

Document the Damage

Take photographs and videos before moving anything to help with insurance documentation.

Remove Standing Water Quickly

The sooner water is removed, the better the chances of minimizing structural damage.

Begin Drying Immediately

Moisture trapped behind walls, beneath flooring, and inside insulation can lead to mold growth within days.

Have the Property Professionally Evaluated

Not all damage is visible. Moisture meters, thermal imaging, and professional inspections help identify hidden water that could cause long-term problems.

Can Storm Surge Damage Be Prevented?

No home can completely eliminate the risk of storm surge, but preparation can reduce potential damage.

Before hurricane season:

  • Know your evacuation zone.
  • Review your flood insurance coverage.
  • Move valuables to higher levels when possible.
  • Protect important documents in waterproof containers.
  • Secure outdoor furniture and equipment.
  • Follow evacuation orders immediately when issued.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is waiting until floodwater is already rising before taking action.

Preparation should happen well before a storm enters the Gulf.

Why Professional Water Restoration Matters After Storm Surge

Flood damage doesn’t end when the water recedes.

Hidden moisture can remain inside walls, subfloors, framing, and insulation long after surfaces appear dry.

Without proper drying and cleaning, homeowners may later face:

  • Mold growth
  • Wood rot
  • Structural deterioration
  • Persistent odors
  • Electrical issues
  • Expensive future repairs

Professional water damage restoration focuses on identifying hidden moisture, removing contaminated materials when necessary, thoroughly drying the structure, and helping restore the property safely.

The sooner restoration begins, the greater the opportunity to minimize damage and reduce repair costs.

Storm surge can leave behind far more damage than what’s visible on the surface. Even after the floodwater recedes, hidden moisture and contamination can continue affecting your home for weeks if not addressed properly.
